Father And Daughter Celebrate Their Birthdays With 39 Acts of Kindness « back

August 6th, 2015

Lee Beck and his daughter Amelie

Did you know? This story was featured in our Make-A-Difference Spotlight podcast - episode #022!

Many of us look forward to those milestone birthdays: turning 18, 21, 25, 30, etc. But we don't usually think about doing something extra special on those "in-between" birthdays.

Yet when you hear the story of this father and daughter duo, you might just decide to change your plans for your next birthday celebration!

Lee Beck and his daughter Amelie share the same birthday month of May. This time he was turning 32, and she was turning 7. But instead of the typical dinners and parties one might expect at those ages, they decided to spend the two weeks surrounding both of their birthdays doing random acts of kindness for others.

39 to be exact.

Their random generosity included things such as writing a letter to a restaurant manager complimenting their server...to leaving a $20 Toys R US gift card in the mail box of someone they thought might need it. They even left a bowl full of pennies at their favorite wishing spot for others to make wishes from.

Theyplaced flowers on a war memorial for Veteran's Day, and made a visit to the Oxford Children's Hospital with art supplies for the kids. And Lee decided to become an organ donor.

But that was just the beginning.

Beck posted a video of their acts (below) to YouTube. And as you might expect, it did not go unnoticed.

In an interview with ABC, Beck said that his daughter "regularly remarks about kindness, and is generally very loving, so I knew she would be keen to do this challenge. When I mentioned the idea to her she thought it was a great idea, and instantly starting talking about some of the people we could help. Her ideas were fantastic, and she put a lot of thought into those that she felt happiest about."

He goes on to say: "we are happy that we were able to meet so many people, learn about various charities, not-for-profit organizations and have some fun along the way! We have a lot of memories to take away from it all. We will certainly be doing some kind acts next year."

When asked why he posted the video, Beck commented that he hopes anyone who sees it will be inspired to do just one random act of kindness themselves.

Challenge accepted!
