Fun Ways To Preserve Your Family History « back

September 20th, 2017

Written by: Beth Forester

October is officially listed as Family History Month within the United States. It is a time to celebrate our unique backgrounds and histories while remembering our roots. And now more than ever, it's important to learn about your heritage.

I am extremely passionate about helping people record and document their lives through photography and video. With a click of a shutter, I can freeze a moment in time, preserve a family's history, and ensure that future generations can know their ancestors.

Here are some fun ways you too can preserve your history and celebrate Family History Month with some family history activities!

Write Down Or Record Your Life Stories

You may think you'll remember every story your grandmother told you, but sometimes, we forget as time passes. The best way to keep these memories preserved is to write them down or record them!

That way, you can go back at any point in time and relive those very moments.

Create a Video Slideshow

There are amazing services out there that can help you create professional looking videos by yourself with your own pictures and videos. For example, animoto.com is a cloud-based application that combines photos, video clips and music into a professional quality video slideshow. It's a fun, nostalgic way to share the special moments over and over again.

Cook a Meal of Secret Family Recipes

Every family has at least one special dish that has been handed down for generations. Why not gather your family for a sit down dinner with an array of these special dishes? Let everyone in on where these dishes came from, teach the younger family members how to make them and create a cookbook for everyone use to keep the traditions alive!

Take a trip and photograph everything

Is your family from Sicily? Gather the troops and take a trip to Italy where you can visit important places where your family history all started, and of course, photograph EVERYTHING!

Make sure to label each photo so you know what you're looking at as time passes.

These are just a few of the many ways you can preserve your family history while having fun at the same time!

Beth realized that photography was the best medium to remember the important people and the once-in-a-lifetime moments that occur in our lives each and every day.
