High School Seniors Do The Unthinkable In Support Of Their Principal « back

Think back - what were the milestone moments in your Senior year of high school? Prom, class trips, graduation day?

Well they pale in comparison to the memories these students created at a Bethlehem, New Hampshire high school!

In a stereotypical world, when students in a senior class make national headlines, many would think those stories involve the typical milestones for senior year, such as a prank on local residents that generally has a more 'negative' connotation to it.

But this particular class did nothing of the kind.  In fact, it's the total opposite of what most teachers and parents have come to expect from seniors these days.

Their principal, Courtney Vashaw, dedicates much of her time to help her students understand the importance of compassion, and caring for others.  And it was these very teachings that would come back to repay her in the most unique way.

Having developed a rapport with her students, Vashaw recently told them that she had been diagnosed with a rare cancer of the soft tissue earlier this month.  And she went on to explain that the illness would likely put her out of school for some time.

The heartbreaking news came just as the seniors were about to leave for their four-day senior trip to Rydin' Hi Ranch in New York. But after hearing of their principal's health concerns, these seniors unanimously decided to give up their class trip...donating nearly $8,000 to their principal's medical care instead.

"[You are] just very caring, very selfless, and we wanted to be selfless, too.  We decided to not go on our senior class trip this year and donate all of our funds to your cause," student Ian Baker told Vashaw as the seniors gathered around her.

Vashaw was overwhelmed by the generosity of her students, and as you might expect, was immediately brought to tears.

In an interview Vashaw said that she tries to teach students to do something bigger than themselves, and that this act of kindness is proof they are listening.

"I feel like this has been a beautiful experience as an educator. You work so hard to try and help cultivate not only academically astute young people but kids who care. I am just so impressed and so proud of these kids for being the embodiment of that."

And if that wasn't enough, the senior class said there will be many more fundraisers to come for their beloved principal.
